Be an advocate for justice and generosity
Great News. We helped save Australian aid to Nepal.
The recent Federal Budget brought a small piece of good news.
Australia’s bilateral aid program in Nepal has been saved, and maintained at its 2019 level. Although only $9.1 million, this aid provides support for vulnerable people in Nepal.
The bilateral aid program in Nepal was under threat as the Government has slashed aid outside the Pacific. Aid to Sub-Saharan Africa was cut by 48%. Aid across the South and West Asia region was cut by 27% (the program in Pakistan was eliminated entirely). In fact, the only countries in South and West Asia not to have their aid programs cut were Nepal, Bhutan and The Maldives.
INF Australia, with Nepalese-Australian community groups from around the country, wrote letters, put out a petition, and engaged the Minister for Foreign Affairs to defend Australia’s aid to Nepal.
And it worked! So thank you to all who prayed and signed the petition.
Sadly, while not cutting the Government has not substantially increased its aid program, even in the midst of a global health and economic crisis. We still need to speak up for justice and generosity.
