The Government committed to increase aid to Nepal in the 9 May Budget

The Federal Budget, handed down on 9 May, delivered a small overall increase in Australia's aid to Nepal from $26.6 million to $27.2 million. Australia's overall budget for international development assistance increased from $4.65 billion to $4.77 billion.

The $600,000 increase in aid to Nepal in the coming year comes through funding to organisations such as the World Food Program (WFP) and United Nations Development Program (UNDP) which will support projects in Nepal.

We welcome these increases.

They are less than what we called for, but when other nations in South Asia saw their aid programs cut in this budget, only Nepal and the Maldives are planned to receive additional funds.

Your voice makes a difference!

Every aid dollar Australia spends is an investment in the wellbeing of our poorer neighbours and a contribution to global efforts to combat poverty, disease, hunger, insecurity and climate change.

Yet, at a time when these challenges are growing, Australian aid remains at the lowest level in our history. We give just 2 cents our of every $100 of our national income and we now rank 27th out of 30 developed nations for the lack of generosity of our aid program, dropping from 21st just two years ago.

Located in the region where the majority of the world's poorest people live, a wealthy nation like Australia, can and should do better. Defence and diplomacy alone are not enough. To be a good neighbour, Australia must invest in the human development of the nations of our region.
